The Apr 18, 2017 news out of Mercedes-Benz headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany as well as from Shanghai, China is that the upcoming 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan will be a model to which to look forward with more than bated breath. The 2017 Shanghai Auto Show saw the unveiling of two models to crown the class, Mercedes-Benz AMG S 63 and AMG S 65, and each's offering of both a host of the automaker's new-generation engine options and an extended suite of Intelligent Drive features leaves naught practically to be desired.
Mercedes-Benz AMG S63 kicks off the offering with a handcrafted AMG® 4.0-liter V8 biturbo with cylinder deactivation, and you can upgrade to a monolithic handcrafted AMG® 6.0-liter V12 biturbo should you take the big step up to AMG S 65. And both Mercedes-Benz S-Class showings have supercar performance written all over them. AMG S 63 looks to metaphorically crush it on the road, shelling out 603 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque, and with a modest increase to 621 horsepower in AMG S 65, that you can get up and go becomes understatement: 738 pound-feet of wheel-spinning torque presents.
Reining in each beast looks to be a snap, too, with the AMG S 63 making available an AMG® Performance 4MATIC+ permanent all-wheel drivetrain, its fully variable torque split helping make sure the sedan makes the most of rpm for the terrain. Mercedes-Benz is set to offer a sporty rear-wheel drive in AMG S 65 – a structure excellent for the car's promise of torquey, peel-out power.
An AMG® SPEEDSHIFT® MCT 9-speed sports transmission, standard in AMG S 63, looks to deliver nigh seamless gearshifts, comparable to those of AMG S 65, showcasing AMG® SPEEDSHIFT® PLUS 7G-TRONIC transmission. Any way they cut through the thick of it, both models own the road. Acceleration from zero to 60 mph in as little as 3.4 seconds all but asks AMG S 63 be taken to the racing circuit, and that as little as 4.2 seconds in AMG S 65, coupled with the electronically limited top speed of 186 mph for both, puts the latter practically neck and neck with the former.
And where would a cutting-edge Mercedes-Benz be without the driver-assist and safety smarts and comfortable interior to make the drive worth it? Both AMG S 63 and AMG S 65 optionally feature plenty of the former, including Active Lane Change Assist, Active Emergency Stop Assist, and Traffic Sign Assist among others. Available Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist enable each sedan to maintain a safe distance from other vehicles while retaining impeccable steering, and the system auto-adjusts speed by road type. Couple this with Road Surface Scan functionality to help detect impediments in advance, and a curve-tilting function to reduce the effects of turning force, and you've got the makings, if not the delivery, of a smooth ride.
It ought to be, given the prospective interior of each model. Dual 12.3" high-resolution displays synergize via a single bonded glass panel, making for ease of use during travel. Myriad new trim options like two natural grain ash wood accents catch the eye while you recline in the lap of high-quality upholstered luxury with three color combination offerings in a wide range of color tones. Optional energy-saving, 64-color ambient LED lighting on trim elements, the central display, in the front-center-console storage area, and elsewhere put on the mood-setting touches. But perhaps the centerpiece of either model's relaxing ride is the optional ENERGIZING Comfort structure, which links vehicle systems like climate control, ambient lighting, massage and fragrancing functions together to enable wellness setting configuration and create a peaceful world apart from the bustle of that outside.
